Think of it like this. If you don't save them, they're dead. Therefore, gone, and you can't interact with them. So what fuckwit would think that having them forget you is better than them actually not existing anymore, and never being able to see them for all of eternity.

It would get really paradoxical when they remember and meet your friends. Plus, what if they were put on a respirator for life and couldn't talk. It says nothing about their condition.

There is only one answer to this. If person is going to die, then if they die, it's lost. If they survive and they don't remember You, at least they are okay. Nothing says You can't meet them again and/or explain what happened. This is selfishness test.
