The wings break easily because they are thin and because of wind resistance, so you die if you try to fly anyway.

I don't think there is any chance I would fly "too close to the sun", the distance is huge and I would either way run out of air if I fly out of the atmosphere

In the myth of Icarus, too close to the sun is defined as not high enough to leave earth's atmosphere, for all those thinking going to space (bec. space is cold.) is a solution. I actually lol at you (JK).

This is a matter of closeness to the sun. The sun is over 98 million miles away. I don't think that will be a problem.

There isn't really a downside. You get a free power, and when you lose them you're no worse off than you were than you started. (Unless you fell to your death. That would be a problem.)
