The nonexistence of God is irrelevant to the hypothetical concept of becoming godlike. If you became godlike, you'd be the God or at least close to qualifying as one.

"To close" meaning, if having god like powers come to a close; "loose" meaning slightly easier to break/fall off. So if I stop having god-like powers, my wishes will become looser, meaning the downside makes no sense, therefore cancelling it out.
