you can only (permanently) paralize yourself or anything else like that if you know that you are paralized when you die.

With the knowledge of when it happens and that there is nothing you can do to stop it, live your life like you DIDN'T know when it would happen. And when it comes due, jump into the time vortex and hope you don't die anyways.
