Unlike you I was healthy. When you wear braces that means your head did not develop in the right way. So your teeth are crap because your mom did not eat right before she had you.

Science says that when your teeth are growing when you are a baby, they normally dont have any problem, but they get developed wrong If you suck your finger too much

I"ve had braces for almost 6 years, with a retainer for two years between. Retainers don't hurt, and you have to take them out for meals, so really there is no downside.
