So.... my eyesight is slowly worsening, and I would absolutely take a year blind over the possibility that I will become irreversibly blind at some point.

I don't actually see a downside here. It would be interesting to be blind for a year, and I want to have a career designing assistive technology, so being blind for a year would actually be really good experience. I'd just have to learn to use audiobooks and a screen reader.
