Wouldn't the Doctor come to see what was going on and then we would have some huge adventure and then he would ask me to be his companion? I see no downside to this. Most of his companions are human anyway.

There is no downside whatsoever. If you don't press the button, you stay human. If you DO press the button, you stay human, but you also gained something extra. Even if you don't want a TARDIS, you could sell it, or give to scientists and gain inconceivable amounts of knowledge from it.
