I could never own just one, so I would get my friend to trade me two until I catch two, trade his/hers two back, and since I'll always have had two caught pokemon, whether or not they"re in the PC doesn't matter because I will have two pokemon...

I'm only assuming the term "own" means that the Pokemon has to have been caught by a Pokeball of yours. So I could still befriend a Pokemon and it would become my companion, I just wouldn't own it.
