That's good, because no matter how you try to defend them, PokÃ©balls are used for inhumane purposes. Trainer battles are practically just dogfights. It's disgusting. Fun game, though.

Pokemon fight. It"s what they do. Many can't complet their life cycle without battling. Trainers add regulations in order to prevent the pokemon from getting hurt.

Hmm...it seems like to make a PokÃ©mon your own, you have to catch it... Although people do befriend PokÃ©mon without capturing them, such as legendaries in the anime... So yeah, it would be cool, I guess.

Pokemon can trust a trainer without a pokeball, and some (like Ash"s Pikachu) actively dislike pokeballs. And even if battling was completely humane and such, you could still train and fight with other trainers. It would just prevent people from abusing the Pokemon, since they aren't in a ball.
