Once upon a time was a creature that was very much like a chicken but wasn't a chicken. It laid a mutated egg and the hatchling became the first chicken. The egg came first - problem solved.

Just want to point out that the egg wasn't necessarily first. Mutations to the chicken during it's lifetime are also a key freature in evolution- the first chicken may have lain the first chicken egg.
