You can't choose to be a companion of the Doctor. The way it was phrased, you could only choose to live in that universe. Being his companion would be entirely up to chance. You might even be on of the random off-screen casualties of Earth's many invasions.

like there are a lot of universes where even ordinary people can put in the effort or make the right deal to become powerful or special (like if i were to choose dnd like it would suck to be a human but i could still learn magic or make a deal with a patron)
