You can't choose to be a companion of the Doctor. The way it was phrased, you could only choose to live in that universe. Being his companion would be entirely up to chance. You might even be on of the random off-screen casualties of Earth's many invasions.

To be honest, I feel comfortable with this one. We don't have villains constantly trying to destroy the world, which I really appreciate. But of course we still have people like trump to make things interesting.
