@DurpyKitty Root beer used to be a type of tea, called Hire’s Root Tea. However, the miners, whom the drink was made for, wouldn’t drink any beverage called tea. So, the name was changed to Hire’s Root Beer. As such, typically, it doesn’t contain alcohol. But it could be made with alcohol in it.

If you drink pop, then soda is just what Americans call it. Technically if you're in a region where it's called pop then you can avoid the downside. But if you can't exit the US then you can just drink juice or water.
