That parachute idea wouldn't work. This power might stop working when you're too low for parachute to open in time... But it'd still be handy, and potentially life-saving. No reason not to press the button.

You shouldn't fly near the ground, you should actually always fly as high as possible. The question says you lose your flying powers for a minute, if you are flying high enough you get them back before you hit the ground.
